GLOSSARY/SAFE HAVEN

Safe Haven

MARKETS
DEFINITION
An asset investors buy during crisis because it holds or gains value when everything else falls — gold, US Treasuries, historically the dollar and yen. Whether bitcoin qualifies is one of the market's live debates.
The label is earned, not claimed — it comes from how an asset actually behaves in the bad weeks. Gold's haven status rests on centuries of crisis bids; Treasuries' on the depth and safety of US debt markets. The test is correlation under stress: when war, defaults, or inflation shocks hit, does money run toward the asset or out of it?
Bitcoin's case is genuinely mixed. The thesis — scarce, borderless, seizure-resistant, no counterparty — reads like a haven checklist, and inside crypto it already behaves like one: stress sends capital from altcoins into bitcoin, pushing dominance up. But at the macro level the 2026 tape shows the opposite reflex: oil shocks and rate scares send haven flows to gold while bitcoin trades like a risk asset, a pattern many attribute to the ETF era's institutional owners trading it off Fed policy rather than war headlines.
IN A SENTENCE
“Gold caught the safe-haven bid on the tanker attacks; bitcoin, once again, did not.”

Common questions

Why isn't "digital gold" acting like gold?

Because behavior follows the owners. Bitcoin's marginal buyer today is an institution managing rate risk, so it trades with tech stocks, not bullion. Haven behavior would require crisis buyers to outweigh rate sellers — which hasn't happened yet.

Has bitcoin ever caught a haven bid?

In narrower crises, yes — currency collapses and capital-control episodes have driven local bitcoin premiums. The label it hasn't earned is the global one: rallying when world markets fall.
