Why market cap, not just price, matters

Price alone tells you what one bitcoin costs. Market cap — price times circulating supply — tells you the total value of the network, which is the number that actually compares against gold, silver, or a company's market cap. Bitcoin's fixed 21 million supply cap makes this comparison unusually clean versus most assets.
Bitcoin's dominance — its share of the total crypto market — is a related but different number. Market cap measures absolute size; dominance measures relative share within crypto specifically.

Frequently asked questions

How is bitcoin's market cap calculated?

Circulating supply multiplied by the current price. As of 2026, roughly 19.9 million of the 21 million bitcoin that will ever exist are in circulation.

Is bitcoin bigger than gold?

No — gold's total above-ground market value is still several times larger than bitcoin's market cap as of 2026. Bitcoin proponents often frame the gap as long-term upside if it captures a larger share of the "store of value" market.

What was bitcoin's first $1 trillion market cap?

Bitcoin first crossed a $1 trillion market cap in February 2021, during the bull run that took its price above roughly $55,000 at the time.
