Proof of Work

PROTOCOL
DEFINITION
Bitcoin’s security engine: adding a block requires provably expending real energy, making history expensive to write and prohibitive to rewrite.
Miners must find a hash below a target — achievable only by trillions of random guesses. The winning number is trivial to verify and enormously costly to find, anchoring the ledger to physics: rewriting old blocks means redoing their work faster than the honest network extends the chain.
PoW also solved fair issuance: coins go to whoever spends resources securing the network, not to insiders. Alternative designs (proof of stake) secure by wealth instead of work — a different set of tradeoffs and, bitcoiners argue, a different trust model entirely.

Common questions

Why not switch to proof of stake?

Bitcoin’s design ties security to external, physical cost rather than internal token ownership. Its community considers that property essential, not incidental.

Does PoW waste energy?

It spends energy on settlement assurance — increasingly from stranded and surplus sources. Whether that purchase is worth it is the honest framing of the debate.
