Bitcoin Core

SOFTWARE

DEFINITION

Bitcoin Core is open-source software that runs a Bitcoin full node and includes wallet functionality. It checks blocks and transactions against its consensus rules rather than relying solely on another service’s account of the blockchain. The software is not Bitcoin itself, and running it does not automatically make you a miner or give its developers control over everyone else’s nodes.

A node operator chooses which software to run. For the practical steps, see our Bitcoin node setup guide; the Bitcoin Core wallet review covers its wallet features separately.

IN A SENTENCE

I use Bitcoin Core to verify the blockchain with my own node.

Common questions

Is Bitcoin Core the Bitcoin network?

No. It is software that participates in the network; the network includes independently operated nodes.

Does running it earn mining rewards?

Not by itself. Operating a validating node is different from performing mining work.

Do I have to use its wallet?

Bitcoin Core includes wallet functionality, but running a node and choosing how to manage your spending keys are separate decisions.
