The Coldcard Mk4 remains a capable Bitcoin-only signer with dual secure elements and air-gapped workflows, but it is no longer our default cold-storage recommendation. After Coinkite's 2026 seed-generation disclosure, buyers and existing owners must verify fixed firmware and seed provenance. Coinkite's current status page lists Mk4 standard firmware 5.6.0 or later as fixed; updating firmware does not repair a seed created by affected software.
Security check required: confirm your model's minimum fixed firmware on Coldcard's official security-status page. If a seed may have been generated on affected firmware, follow the vendor's migration guidance; a firmware update alone is not enough.

Air-gapped means air-gapped
Sign transactions by shuttling a microSD card (or tapping NFC) between the Coldcard and your computer — the device never connects to an online machine. That eliminates the entire class of USB and cable-based attacks, which is why security researchers keep recommending it.
Features nobody else has
A duress PIN that opens a decoy wallet under coercion. A Brick-Me PIN that destroys the device. Seed XOR to split your backup across multiple cards. BIP-85 child seeds. These are answers to real threat models, and no mainstream competitor matches them.
The tradeoff
The Mk4 assumes competence. Pair it with Sparrow Wallet, practice a full recovery before funding it seriously, and budget an afternoon to learn the workflow. If that sounds like too much, the Trezor Safe 5 is the friendlier compromise.
Buy it if…
You are an experienced user who can verify fixed firmware, create a fresh seed safely, test recovery, and operate an air-gapped workflow.
Skip it if…
It is your first hardware wallet, or you cannot verify firmware and seed history — start with the Trezor Safe 5.
Common questions
Coldcard Mk4 or the newer Q?
The Q adds a QWERTY keyboard, larger screen, and QR signing for ~$90 more. Same security architecture — pay the premium if you plan to use passphrases or multisig heavily.
Do I need Sparrow Wallet with it?
Effectively yes for a good experience — Coldcard is a signing device, not a full wallet app. Sparrow (free, desktop) is the standard pairing.
Why Bitcoin-only?
Less code means fewer bugs and a smaller attack surface. If you also hold other assets, use a separate multi-coin device rather than compromising your bitcoin storage.
