The filings
Mubadala Investment Company, one of Abu Dhabi's two major sovereign wealth funds, disclosed a position in BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) worth approximately $490 million in its latest 13F filing. The Abu Dhabi Investment Council, a separate sovereign entity managing a portion of the emirate's reserves, disclosed its own IBIT stake worth approximately $273 million. Combined, the two funds report holding more than $763 million in the ETF.
Why sovereign funds use ETFs rather than direct custody
Sovereign wealth funds manage national reserves under strict governance and audit requirements, and typically prefer regulated, exchange-traded vehicles over managing bitcoin directly. A spot ETF gives a fund like Mubadala or the Abu Dhabi Investment Council exposure to bitcoin's price without needing to build private key custody infrastructure, satisfy crypto-specific compliance regimes, or explain a novel asset class to auditors and oversight boards in the same way a direct holding would require.
The two funds join a growing list of large institutional holders disclosed through this reporting season, including Tudor Investment Corporation and Edelman Financial Engines, both of which recently increased their own IBIT positions. Sovereign wealth fund involvement specifically is notable because these entities represent long-horizon, state-level capital rather than active trading desks — a different kind of holder than a hedge fund or wealth manager.
WHY IT MATTERS
Sovereign wealth fund exposure to bitcoin ETFs signals a different tier of institutional demand than hedge funds or wealth managers — state-level capital typically moves on longer time horizons and larger absolute scale. As with all 13F disclosures, the filing describes a position from the end of the prior quarter, not a live signal of continued buying.
What to watch next
1.Whether other Gulf sovereign wealth funds disclose similar bitcoin ETF positions in upcoming 13F filings.
2.Whether Mubadala or the Abu Dhabi Investment Council increase their stakes next quarter.
3.Whether daily ETF flow data shows sustained buying consistent with long-horizon sovereign accumulation.
