OUR VERDICT
BEST OVERALL
★★★★★4.5/5
iTrustCapital is the cleanest all-around crypto IRA: a flat 1% per trade, zero setup or monthly fees, a $1,000 minimum, 24/7 trading, and US-based human support. Over 250,000 funded accounts and $16B+ in volume back it up. Custodial, not self-custody — but for straightforward tax-advantaged bitcoin, it is the benchmark the rest get measured against.
WHAT WE LIKED
+Flat 1% trade fee — no monthly, setup, or annual fees
+Traditional, Roth and SEP options; confirm SIMPLE transfer eligibility
+24/7 trading with US-based human support
+Institutional custody via Coinbase Custody + Fireblocks
WHAT WE DIDN'T
−Custodial — you never hold keys
−90+ altcoins invite distraction from bitcoin
−Verify applicable custody-insurance terms; coverage is not a guarantee
What it costs
The published opening minimum is $1,000; additional deposits have a $500 minimum. Check current fees and administrative charges before funding.
Why it wins on structure
Most crypto IRAs historically buried costs in setup charges, monthly fees, and spreads. iTrustCapital charges 1% when you trade and nothing when you don’t — which is exactly the right shape for buy-and-hold retirement money. A one-time buy costs 1%; twenty years of holding costs nothing more.
The rollover path
An eligible employer-plan rollover or IRA-to-IRA transfer can fund the account without using the annual contribution allowance. Like-for-like transfers generally preserve tax deferral; a pre-tax-to-Roth conversion can create taxable income. iTrustCapital’s rollover guidance gives a typical 5–15 business-day timeframe but warns that some rollovers take 3–4 weeks. This is the provider’s estimate, not a test result.
The custody question
Assets sit with Coinbase Custody and Fireblocks — institutional-grade, but not your keys. IRS rules make true self-custody inside an IRA genuinely hard; if holding your own keys in retirement is the point, Unchained’s multisig IRA is the answer at a higher price.
Use it if…
You want tax-advantaged bitcoin with the simplest honest pricing and don’t need to hold keys.
Common questions
Is iTrustCapital legitimate?
Yes — operating since 2018, 250,000+ funded accounts, $16B+ in transactions, with assets held at recognized institutional custodians.
What IRAs does it support?
Traditional, Roth and SEP options, with eligible transfers and employer-plan rollovers. Do not confuse accepting SIMPLE IRA funds with providing an employer contribution integration: iTrustCapital says direct employer-plan contributions are not currently integrated.
Can I move an existing IRA in without taxes?
Eligible like-for-like IRA transfers generally preserve tax deferral and do not count against annual contribution limits. A Roth conversion is different and can create taxable income. Confirm the receiving account type and eligibility with both custodians and your tax adviser.
