The biggest whales date from bitcoin's earliest era, when coins were cheap and mining was easy — exchanges, early adopters, and miners who accumulated five- and six-figure BTC positions before 2018. Analysts watch three whale behaviors:
accumulation (coins leaving exchanges into
cold storage),
distribution (coins moving onto exchanges, potential sell pressure), and
awakenings — long-dormant wallets suddenly moving, like the 8.5-year sleeper that shifted $383 million in July 2026.
A whale move is not automatically a sale: transfers to fresh addresses often mean custody upgrades or estate planning. The tell is the destination — an exchange deposit address means the coins can hit the order book; a new
multisig vault means the opposite.
