OUR VERDICT EUROPE’S VALUE PICK ★★★★4.2/5
The Core ETP (CBTC) brought US-style pricing to Europe: 0.10% for physically backed, cold-stored bitcoin on Xetra and SIX. From the most experienced crypto-ETP issuer on the continent (running since 2018), it is our default recommendation for European brokerage accounts — just mind that ETPs are debt instruments, not UCITS funds.

ETP vs ETF, in one paragraph

European rules (UCITS) block single-asset funds, so bitcoin trades as an ETP: a debt security fully collateralized by bitcoin held in custody. In practice it behaves like an ETF; legally, you hold a secured note. The collateralization is what makes the structure sound — verify it, and 21Shares documents it well.

Why the Core product matters

European crypto ETPs long charged 1.5–2.5%. CBTC's current 0.10% product fee is one cost to compare alongside spreads, brokerage charges and currency conversion.

Alternatives worth knowing

CoinShares Bitcoin ETP (0.15%) and WisdomTree’s ETP compete closely; legacy products like the original 21Shares ABTC still charge more for the same exposure. Check the TER line before you buy any of them.
Buy it if…
You are in Europe and want physically backed bitcoin exposure through an eligible brokerage account.
Skip it if…
Your broker offers it poorly or you can self-custody real bitcoin instead.

Common questions

Is an ETP as safe as an ETF?

Structurally different, practically similar when fully collateralized and cold-stored. Read the collateral terms — that is where ETP quality varies.

Which exchanges list it?

Deutsche Börse Xetra and SIX Swiss Exchange, in multiple currencies. Most European brokers route to one of them.

What about the original ABTC product?

Same issuer, older product, higher fee. The Core line exists precisely to compete on cost — prefer it.
